Most full time coal boiler users end up using 4 tons or so per year - given your climate and a cold winter, and normal house. Since coal is usually only burned during the coldest weather, this turns out to be 4 tons or so.
The working temperature of 35°C is maintained by hot water recirculating through 3 panel heaters within the tower. A propane boiler is used to meet initial heating requirements; thereafter, a natural gas boiler, modified to burn biogas, maintains the tower temperature. Surplus gas is used to heat a greenhouse and two large fish tanks.
The boiler temperature or burn rate for wood is set by turning the adjustable thermostat knob at upper right in the photo - green arrown #1. The thermostatic control monitors the temperature in the combustion chamber / heat exchanger on the wood side of the boiler.
Coal received from the mines is stored in the coal yard adjacent to the power plant. It is then conveyed on a daily basis to the boiler and stored in a ‘Coal Silo’. ‘Coal feeders’ continuously feed the required amount of coal to the ‘Coal Pulverisers’. Coal Pulverisers grind the coal to a very fine powder to make it burn easily.
All of these methods increase the cost of burning coal in boilers. Many power plants now burn a mixture of coal in their boilers to minimize the costs associated with burning a high sulfur content coal from the Appalachians with that of a low sulfur content coal from the Powder River Basin (PRB).
Burning Anthracite coal requires either a stove, furnace or a boiler that are more complicated to operate than electric or natural gas powered furnaces. A stoker is a coal burning heater that needs periodic maintenance, supplying it with coal pieces and removal of ash – a byproduct from burning coal.
