And more recently, biomass energy is being adopted in Asia and Africa, where decentralised biomass plants provide electricity to communities who aren’t connected to a national power grid. Existing biomass plants in India, Kenya, Mauritius and Ethiopia are already proving successful, by co-generating power with agricultural waste.
BIOMASS PROGRAM In converting biomass into biofuels and other products, integrated bioreﬁneries can use lignin and other residues to generate biopower for use in processing or for sale to the grid. These biomass technologies generate varying amounts of electricity depending on the size of the technology deployment and the biomass resource itself.
The units are delivered to the site, integrated together, connected to a cooling source and the electrical grid, and ready to operate. The combination of the two units provides the clean disposal of tons of woody biomass waste per hour, in addition to renewable energy production.
The localized generation of clean power also provides community residents and local governments with new revenue streams, grants a community more direct connection to and autonomy over the production of its energy resources, and adds additional low carbon sources to the grid.
4.3.3 Generating Biopower Biopower uses biomass to generate electricity through biopower plants, which use direct-fired systems to burn bioenergy feedstocks to produce steam. Feedstock for power generation can include urban waste, agricultural, and forestry sources.
Biomass is presently the largest U.S. renewable energy source with more than 200 existing biopower plants now providing electricity for 1.5 million American homes; manure-to-energy biogas projects are expanding and could power up to 3% of North America’s electricity needs.
